Ingredients

  • 400 g firm tofu cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup for vegan option
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds toasted
  • 2 green onions finely chopped

Instructions

  • Begin by gently patting the tofu cubes dry with a paper towel to eliminate excess moisture. Place the cubes in a mixing bowl and sprinkle with cornstarch, tossing them until all sides are evenly coated with a thin layer.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the tofu cubes in a single layer, ensuring they aren’t overcrowded. Fry the tofu for 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they develop a golden-brown, crispy crust. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, honey (or maple syrup for a vegan option), and minced garlic. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined, forming a fragrant sauce.
  • Return the skillet to medium heat. Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet and allow it to simmer gently for 1–2 minutes, thickening slightly as it cooks. Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet, tossing carefully to coat each piece evenly in the rich, glossy sauce.
  • Sprinkle the tofu with toasted sesame seeds and garnish with freshly chopped green onions for a burst of color and flavor. Serve the tofu warm, either as a snack, appetizer, or alongside steamed rice for a satisfying meal.
